La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) declaró la emergencia internacional por la nueva cepa de coronavirus (2019-nCov), que surgió en Wuhan, China, y que ya dejó 170 muertos y 7818 contagiados, 98 de ellas fuera de China.
El director general de la OMS, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, hizo el anuncio en una conferencia de prensa desde Ginebra, luego de participar de la última reunión de la comisión de emergencia. “No sabemos qué tipo de daño podría causar el 2019-nCoV si se expandiera a un país con un sistema de salud más débil. Debemos actuar ahora para prepararnos para esa posibilidad“, dijo.
En la última década, cinco enfermedades fueron declaradas como emergencias internacionales por la OMS:
La gripe porcina
La pandemia de gripe porcina de 2009 mató a unas 284.500 personas, según un grupo internacional de científicos, aunque un estudio de 2012 de la revista Lancet Infectious Diseases detalló que la cifra podría haber sido de hasta 579,000 personas.
Ébola en África occidental
Un brote de ébola en Sierra Leona, Guinea y Liberia entre 2013 y 2016 mató al menos a 11.300 personas, más que todos los demás brotes de ébola conocidos juntos. Tal fue el impacto que les costó a esos tres países un estimado de 53.000 millones de dólares.
Polio
Los casos de polio en Paquistán aumentaron de 58 en 2012 a 93 en 2013, más de una quinta parte del total mundial de 417. Pakistán no pudo frenar la propagación de la enfermedad y se aplicaron medidas globales allí, al igual que en Siria y en Camerún.
Zika
El zika se había extendido a más de 60 países desde que se identificó el brote en Brasil en 2015. Para noviembre de 2016, cuando la OMS declaró el fin de la emergencia del Zika, se habían registrado unos 2300 casos en todo el mundo de bebés nacidos con microcefalia, la mayoría en Brasil.
Ébola en la república democrática del Congo
Para el 14 de enero del año pasado, se registraron 3406 casos de ébola en el Congo, incluidas 2236 muertes, en el brote declarado en agosto de 2018 que, según la OMS, habrá costado 1000 millones de dólares para cuando se detenga.
